J Street Hospitality is an innovative real estate investment, development and asset management firm based in downtown San Diego. The company takes pride in developing contemporary, lifestyle-focused hotels located in high barrier to entry markets, urban cores and near demand generators attracting both business and leisure guests. Targeted projects include transforming underutilized buildings into lodging destinations as well as bringing new hotels to market from the ground up.

Entrepreneurial in spirit and vision, J Street Hospitality’s highly experienced team led by Sajan Hansji continues to selectively grow its portfolio with financial discipline and strategic execution, while remaining focused on maximizing asset values and investment returns. Sajan Hansji
President and Founder

Sajan Hansji is the founder and President of J Street Hospitality. Mr. Hansji oversees all aspects of the company’s strategic planning and vision, development, and acquisitions. The company focuses on the development of contemporary lifestyle hotels located in high barrier to entry markets and urban cores. Mr. Hansji is a proven leader accountable for transforming a number of underutilized buildings and land into lodging destinations.   He has defied standards with creatively designed and developed urban hotels. His creativity and passion was recognized when he was awarded Marriott’s Design of Excellence Award for the Residence Inn Gaslamp San Diego Project. In addition, Mr. Hansji was invited to be a member of Marriott International’s Design & Construction Committee for the Courtyard Brand.

Prior to J Street Hospitality, Sajan co-founded Hansji Hotels, a successful hotel development company where he oversaw strategic direction and portfolio growth for 7 years. With over 12 years of total executive leadership roles, Mr. Hansji has established long standing successful relationships with Marriott International, Hilton Worldwide, Starwood Hotels, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, and Swinerton Builders.

Mr. Hansji graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Science degree from the School of Hotel Administration, is a board member of the San Diego Chapter of the Cornell Hotel Society, and a member of the San Diego Coastal Chapter of the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO).

Sajan is a die-hard Lakers fan that enjoys the history of iconic buildings and bridges. You’ll often find him and his wife Dimple, relaxing on or near a beach. He is originally from Orange County, CA and currently resides in Coronado, CA.

 

Shane Kunimura
Chief Operating Officer

Shane Kunimura joined J Street Hospitality as its Chief Operating Officer in 2016 and has over 15 years of real estate experience. He is responsible for the organization’s finance, investor relations and reporting, legal, and human resources departments.

Prior to joining the company, Mr. Kunimura was a Senior Vice President with Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s (“BAML’s”) Commercial Real Estate Banking group where he spent over 10 years in various roles including client management, asset management, and underwriting. In his most recent role, Mr. Kunimura oversaw the origination and portfolio management of a $2B+ debt portfolio financing across all asset classes for real estate developers, private equity firms, and REIT’s. Mr. Kunimura was previously responsible for the asset management and disposition of over $500M of commercial real estate, while serving in his asset management role in Bank of America’s OREO (Other Real Estate Owned) Group. Mr. Kunimura started his career in retail real estate investments and later transitioned to urban infill homebuilding.

Mr. Kunimura graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from USC’s Marshall School of Business and completed the Light Construction Development Management program at the University of California Irvine. Mr. Kunimura is currently a licensed California Real Estate Broker. He previously held a Series 7/63 securities license and CCIM designation.

Shane was born and raised in Orange County, CA and spent his summers living in Hawaii as a child. He currently still resides in Orange County with his wife Valerie and two children, Kalani & Malia. His children keep him busy most weekends as you’ll usually find him watching or coaching soccer, baseball, football, dance or gymnastics. He also enjoys ski trips with the family, playing ice hockey, and following USC football.

 

Brad Hatfield
Vice President of Real Estate

With over 20 years in hospitality real estate investments, corporate finance, and investor relations, Brad Hatfield serves as Vice President of Real Estate for J Street Hospitality. Mr. Hatfield oversees the company portfolio for asset management and revenue management. Additionally, he focuses on the sourcing and execution of acquisitions, dispositions, and developments.

Prior to J Street Hospitality, Mr. Hatfield served as Director of Acquisitions for JC Resorts where he led the company’s resort and golf course investment efforts and assisted with capital financing and asset management of its portfolio. Mr. Hatfield has also served in various roles at CNL Hotels & Resorts, Universal Studios’ Recreation Group, and Wyndham Hotels & Resorts. He also served as an equity research associate at Deutsche Bank and Citigroup/Salomon Smith Barney, and started his career at PwC. Mr. Hatfield earned a CPA degree and holds a B.S. degree in Accounting from Indiana University.

Brad is the resident outdoor enthusiast at J Street Hospitality as he spends a majority of his free time standup paddle boarding, hiking, biking, and skiing. He also enjoys traveling, and his most memorable cultural site visited was Machu Picchu. Brad is originally from Indianapolis, IN and currently resides a few short blocks from the sand in Pacific Beach in San Diego, CA.

 

Lauri Norman
Corporate Controller

Lauri Norman brings a vast amount of development accounting and finance experience to her position as Corporate Controller for J Street Hospitality. Ms. Norman is responsible for overseeing the company’s accounting and financial reporting, tax preparation, loan compliance, and human resources activities.

Prior to J Street Hospitality, Ms. Norman served as San Diego Division Controller for Brookfield Homes and Director of Finance for D.R. Horton San Diego. She also worked in various accounting roles with Fairfield Residential, Radnor West, and PM Realty Group. Ms. Norman earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Fresno State University.

Lauri spends her free time in the water at the beach, attending concerts, reading memoirs, and laughing with her friends. Her favorite travel spots are Barcelona, Tuscany, and trolling the lakes of Minnesota at night via pontoon boat. Lauri grew up in San Jose, CA and has spent most of her adult life in San Diego, CA.

 

Dharmesh Patel
Development Manager

Dharmesh Patel serves as Development Manager for J Street Hospitality and is responsible for the processing of project entitlements, procurement, and preopening logistics. Mr. Patel focuses on developing deep relationships and working closely with local government bodies, general contractors, architects, interior designers, purchasing agents, and property operators to ensure projects are delivered on schedule and on budget.

Prior to J Street Hospitality, Mr. Patel served as a Commercial Loan Specialist for the Longsight Financial where he was a conduit to providing CMBS, bridge, conventional, and SBA loans to the hospitality industry. He has also served as a Commissioner for the City of Phoenix’s Fire Safety Board, and as a Senior Designer for BBC. Mr. Patel holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Graphic Information Design from the University of Westminster in London. He also completed the Leadership Program at Ashridge Business School in Hertfordshire, England.

Dharmesh was born and raised in Leicester, England which is the home of the 2016 Premier League champions. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with family and friends, sporting events, golf, and traveling.

 

Jon Cummings
Project Manager

With over 7-years of extensive construction experience, Jon Cummings serves as Project Manager for J Street Hospitality. Mr. Cummings has worked on the construction of hospitality, multi-family, medical, and higher education facilities while working for various general contractors including Swinerton Builders. His primary responsibilities were estimating, quality management, scheduling, safety, risk mitigation, and cost control. Mr. Cummings has worked on projects ranging from $1,000,000 to $120,000,000.

Prior to entering the construction field, Mr. Cummings served 4 years in the Navy as a Damage Control Man; more commonly known as the Navy’s fire fighters. Mr. Cummings earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Engineering from San Diego State University.

Jon was born in Sacramento and grew up in a small town in the Sierra Nevada Mountains called Grass Valley. He currently resides with his wife in San Diego, CA. In his free time, Jon enjoys traveling, golf, aviation, and football. His favorite country to visit is Thailand and favorite golf course is Torrey Pines. Jon plans on pursuing his pilot’s license in the future and is a proud member of Raider Nation.

 

Tyler Deetjen
Finance & Development Analyst

Tyler Deetjen serves as Finance & Development Analyst for J Street Hospitality and is responsible for providing support across an array of functions including acquisitions, development, asset management, and finance. Mr. Deetjen focuses on assisting with due diligence for acquisitions/development/dispositions, preparing financing and loan packages, reviewing contracts, and assessing property performance.

Prior to J Street Hospitality, Mr. Deetjen served as a Senior Client Service Analyst for Northern Trust in Chicago where he oversaw investment management reporting for portfolio managers across the U.S. He has also served as a Project Engineer for his Father’s concrete company; Premium Concrete, Inc. Mr. Deetjen holds a MBA with a focus in Entrepreneurship from the Loyola University Chicago along with a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from Valparaiso University, where he also played college baseball.

Tyler grew up in Chicago, IL and is an avid Blackhawks and Cubs fan. He now resides in San Diego with his wife, Marie. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with family and friends, surfing, hiking, and attending sporting events.
